Free event presented by the CRA open for seniors

The CRA is offering a free event for seniors to help them know when the CRA contacts them and what some of the current CRA scams are.

NIPIGON—Too often seniors are not sure if emails said to be from the Canada Revenue Agency are legitimate.  Consequently, some fall prey to scams who intimidate them into sharing personal information.

The CRA is offering a free event open to seniors dealing with the topic of “Scams”. Hosted by the Red Rock Public Library and in Nipigon at Edge Arts, the session via ZOOM will present information as to how best seniors can prevent themselves from falling victim to scams.

Typically, emails will be directed to seniors that indicate that they are from the CRA asking them to share personal information, or send money for balances owing to the CRA.

The government does contact Canadians but not being able to know if these requests are legitimate or truly from the government, can cause serious consequences for seniors.

The information session is scheduled to take place on Wednesday, June 29, from 3 p.m.-4:30 p.m. at Nipigon Edge Arts.  Interested seniors can access the ZOOM details by contacting either Red Rock Public Library, or Nipigon Edge Arts.

The sessions will provide guidelines so that seniors know what to expect when the CRA contacts them, what they may ask, what they will not ask, plus what the most current CRA scams are.
