Greenstone mayor wants quick environmental assessment process as landfill sites filling fast

The Municipality of Greenstone has begun an environmental assessment process to determine their long-term plan for waste disposal.

GREENSTONE — The mayor of Greenstone says the environmental assessment process for a long-term waste disposal plan needs to be done sooner rather than later.

The Municipality of Greenstone has begun an environmental assessment process to create a long-term plan for waste disposal, that will facilitate the engagement of the community, Indigenous groups and organizations in the region.

Mayor Renald Beaulieu said his goal is to move the process along quickly, and that all key stakeholders and community partners are involved in this environmental assessment process.

“We have all the communities surrounding Greenstone and our First Nations are involved in the process, everyone is involved in this project," Beaulieu said in an interview with CFNO's Al Cresswell.

"This is key to making sure this happens sooner than later, because Greenstone is definitely in a position where landfills are closing. They are filling faster than they are supposed to be because some landfill sites have closed. So, this is definitely an important project for Greenstone."

Public open sessions will be held next week to evaluate alternatives for waste management and disposal, to identify a preferred system in order to do this and to select a preferred site. The municipality has hired the services of KGS Group, who the mayor described as consultants specializing in public information sessions.

The first round of public workshops are scheduled at all community centres. Planned dates are:

  • Longlac: Nov. 7: Longlac Sportsplex 200 Picnic Point Road 3-7pm
  • Nakina – Nov. 8: Nakina Community Centre 206 North Ave 3-7pm
  • Geraldton - Nov. 9: Geraldton Community Centre 200 Wardrope Ave 3-7 pm
  • Beardmore – Nov. 10: 100 Main St 3-7 pm
