Health conditions may cause increased risk in falls

Porcupine Health Unit shared helpful tips to prevent the increase of falling due to health conditions.

HORNEPAYNE—Porcupine Health Unit addressed the concerns and dangers of increased risk of falls, due to health conditions.

They posted a list of health conditions that may cause this increase. They also informed the public of how they can reduce this risk, and offered a website that people can visit for more information.

As part of their “Stay on Your Feet” campaign, Porcupine Health Unit listed the following health conditions that may lead to the risk of falling:

  • Heart conditions
  • Diabetes
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Depression
  • Dementia

They may cause muscle weakness, dizziness, balance problems, slowed reactions, light-headedness, etc.

They encouraged individuals to try to reduce the risk by learning about their health condition, and asking their health care provider. Porcupine Health Unit suggest getting fact sheets or join a support group. Some of their own tips included:

  • Keeping a regular sleep schedule.
  • Eating well by following Canada's Food Guide: http://food-guide.canada.ca/en/
  • Taking part in physical activity.
  • Enjoying your social and recreational activities.
