THUNDER BAY – The rampant rise in COVID-19 cases continued unabated on Thursday, with 102 cases announced.

There was also one more death recorded, bringing the total to 70 since the pandemic began.

With just four previously announced cases considered resolved, there are now 312 active cases, the most since there were 325 on March 22.

It’s just the second time more than 100 cases were reported in a single day, the record 111 announced on March 7, when the district hit 470 active cases, the highest since the pandemic began. However, 70 of those cases were late reports and should have been reported over the two previous days, making Thursday's count the highest single-day count yet.

There have been 3,582 COVID-19 cases announced this year, and 4,167 overall.

Of the new cases, 27 are considered close contacts and 26 are household contacts. Forty cases are still pending, with seven related to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario and two of unknown origin.

There are no new cases from the district in hospital.

One hundred of the cases are considered to reside in Thunder Bay and surrounding areas, while two live in district communities.
