Health unit reports 89 new COVID-19 cases

Christmas case count brings active total to 152 across Thunder Bay district.

THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit reported 89 new COVID-19 cases Monday, a count that included weekend numbers.

That caused active cases to jump to 152 across the district, even with 28 previous cases declared resolved Monday.

That's the highest level of active cases reported by the health unit since April 5.

Of the new cases, 14 were attributed to household contact, 20 to other close contact, and 12 to travel outside of Northwestern Ontario, while four had no known exposure and an exposure category was pending for 39 others.

The new cases involved 76 Thunder Bay-area residents and 13 residents of district communities.

There were three district residents in hospital with the virus as of Monday morning, according to health unit data, with none of those reported to be in the ICU.

Ontario reported 9,418 cases province-wide on Monday, after reporting a record 10,412 new cases on Saturday.
