THUNDER BAY – The Thunder Bay District Health Unit has reported an increase in the number of patients hospitalized with COVID-19, though fewer of those people are now in the Intensive Care Unit.

Numbers released Friday by the health unit showed there 53 people in hospitals across the district with the virus, up from 44 on Wednesday.

Six of those people were in ICU, down from 10 on Wednesday.

Thunder Bay’s regional hospital reported 46 COVID-positive patients as of Thursday, including six in ICU.

The health unit reported 225 new confirmed cases since Wednesday, when it last provided an update.

The TBDHU announced earlier this week it would reduce the frequency of its updates on COVID-19 to Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, saying it responded to the evolving nature of the virus and testing availability.

There were 341 active cases confirmed across the district Friday, up 39 from Wednesday.
