HORNEPAYNE—According to Porcupine Health Unit (PHU) aging can not cause hearing loss. For seniors that can also cause loss of balance and falls.

According to PHU, when a person has hearing loss, “their brain works harder in order for them to hear.” As a result, this can dimmish the amount of power the brain has to focus on balance.

They offer seniors some helpful hints to reduce the risk of falling. Talk to a health care provider if you experience a decrease in your hearing and do so more often especially after the age of 65. Take time to exercise and walk as needed to maintain muscle strength.

Following these simple tips can minimize the risk of falls due to hearing loss.
