UPDATED: Highway 17 closed due to flooding

The Trans-Canada Highway was shut down between Wawa and the Montreal River

WAWA — A 107-kilometre stretch of Highway 17 remained closed Wednesday afternoon because of flooding.

Traffic in both directions was initially closed between Wawa and Batchawana Bay, after washouts were reported at Lake Superior Provincial Park.

Ontairo 511 subsequently reported the closed section had been shortened to the stretch between Wawa and the Montreal River.

OPP posted a message on social media stating the shutdown was due to unsafe road conditions, and advised motorists to avoid the area "as the closure is expected to last a few days due to repairs."

A lengthy detour was available via secondary highways connecting Wawa, Chapleau and Thessalon.
