MARATHON, Ont. – The 62-year-old driver of a passenger van was airlifted to hospital with serious injuries following a collision with a transport east of Marathon.

Ontario Provincial Police say the highway was closed completely at about 1:30 p.m. for about four hours, at which time it was opened to intermediate traffic. Two hours later, at approximately 7:35 p.m., Highway 17 was completely reopened in both directions.

According to a release the incident, which took place near Rouse Lake, involved a van that allegedly crossed the centre line, colliding with an oncoming transport.

Police say the investigation is ongoing.

The victim suffered major injuries, initially sent to a local hospital before being flown to Thunder Bay for further treatment.
