HORNEPAYNE—The Municipality of Hornepayne knows that sightings of coyote are common in the region, and that people and wild animals, live side by side in Ontario.  But what do you do if you should see one? They offer their advice to their residents, and answer this common question.

The township’s advice included both preventative measures and information about what you should do to stay safe in the event that you face a wild animal, in this case a coyote.

Coyotes find their way into residential areas for a variety of reasons; one of them is food. They are attracted to garbage that is easily accessible, and often it just means tearing open the type of container in which the garbage is stored. Coyotes are wary of people so they typically avoid humans.

The township shared that should you encounter a coyote, here is what you should do.

  • Never approach or touch a coyote.
  • Do not turn your back on, or run from a coyote.
  • Back away from the coyote, while remaining calm.
  • Stand tall, wave your hands, and make lots of noise.
  • Carry a flashlight at night to scare off coyotes.
  • Do not let pets chase coyotes as it could result in injuries to your pet.
  • If a coyote poses immediate danger or threat to public safety, call 911.
