GREENSTONE – The curling rinks in Beardmore and Nakina will likely be ready for use by autumn with new ice-making systems, Greenstone’s mayor says.
The municipality has awarded CIMCO Refrigeration a contract for ice plant upgrades at the two facilities, at a cost of $1.23 million plus the municipality’s portion of non-refundable HST.
“CIMCO was hoping to get it completed before the start of the new season,” Greenstone Mayor Jamie McPherson told Newswatch on Monday. “It’s going to be a challenge, but that’s the goal.”
The curling facilities were saved in a Greenstone council decision last month to close the community skating rinks at the recreation complexes in Beardmore and Nakina.
McPherson told Newswatch last October that the municipality was caught “between a rock and a hard place,” wanting to keep all community facilities open but being legally required to balance its operating budget.
Incorporated in 2001 by the Ontario government, Greenstone comprises Beardmore, Nakina, Longlac, Geraldton and smaller communities on nearly 2,800 square kilometres of land straddling Highway 11.
