NIPIGON – On June 22, 2023, conservation officers conducted a patrol of the 801 Road area in the Nipigon district where they said they found a fisherman at a nearby tourist outfitter cabin in possession of 16 Walleye, which is 10 over the provincial limit, according to a Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) release.

The MNRF said officers spotted the filleted fish so the species of fish could not be identified.

On Nov. 1, 2023, the fisherman pleaded guilty in the Ontario Court of Justice in Thunder Bay for possessing over the walleye limit and possessing fish that was skinned to prevent identification of the species.

The fisherman was fined $3,000 and is prohibited from possessing an Ontario fishing license and engaging in any fishing activities in Canada for three years.
