Inclusive multi-sport turf facility coming to Marathon

The new facility will go along the town’s waterfront property.

MARATHON — A new multi-sports court will be built in Marathon, thanks to half a million dollars in new funding from Canadian Tire.

The town received the grant at the second annual Jumpstart for Joy event from at the Marathon location on June 22, supporting the development of an inclusive, multi-sport court for local and visiting community members.

“The highlight of the day was our big announcement: Jumpstart will fully fund the development of a new $500,000 sports field for children in Marathon — a lasting investment in the well-being and active future of our young generation,” said a media release issued by the local Canadian Tire.

More than 700 community members attended the event, which opened with an instrumental performance by a First Nations group, a speech from Mayor Rick Dumas and the major funding announcement.

“The new multi-sport court is a significant step forward for Marathon, promoting healthy living, community involvement, and accessible recreation for all residents,” Dumas was quoted saying in a press release from the municipality. “The Town of Marathon, Jumpstart and Canadian Tire Marathon are united in their commitment to making sport and play accessible to all, ensuring every child, regardless of ability, has the opportunity to belong, grow, and thrive in Northwestern Ontario.”

The new court is a part of the ongoing Active Living Centre project in Marathon, according to the release. "Designed with accessibility and inclusivity at its core,  the court will accommodate both traditional and adaptive sports."

“This inclusive multi-sport court represents more than just a place to play; it’s a place where dreams take root, where friendships are built, and where kids from across Northwestern Ontario can feel like they belong,” said Mahsa Shidvash and Hamidreza Homayouni, Associate Dealers of Canadian Tire Marathon, said in the release. “As someone who believes deeply in the power of sport to shape lives, I’m beyond proud to be part of a project that will inspire generations to move, connect, and grow right here in the community of Marathon.”

The city has not yet released a construction timeline but said those details can be expected in the coming months.
