THUNDER BAY— An inquest into the death of a man at Lac des Illes mine five years ago is set to begin next month.

Dr. Kevin Miller, the regional supervising coroner for the North region, Thunder Bay Office, announced on Tuesday that a date has been scheduled for the inquest into the death of Edouard Gallant.

The inquest will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Monday, September 22, 2025. Dr. Jennifer Tang will be the presiding officer and Jai Dhar will be the inquest counsel.

Gallant died on May 27, 2020, at the age of 64, from injuries sustained working at the Impala mine on Highway 527, north of Thunder Bay.

An inquest into his death is mandatory under the Coroners Act.

The inquest is expected to last six days and hear from approximately ten witnesses.

The process involves examining the circumstances surrounding Gallant's death and the jury may make recommendations aimed at preventing further deaths.

The inquest will be conducted by video conference where members of the public who wish to view the proceedings can do so live on Sept. 22.

The mining company was fined and pleaded guilty to the Ministry of Labour in October, 2023.
