Kiwissa Ski Hill preparing to open this month

It looked touch and go for a while but the hill finally received enough snow over Christmas

MANITOUWADGE – Outdoor enthusiasts in better start getting their skis ready the only hill in Manitouwadges is preparing to open for the season.

Kiwissa Ski Hill is getting the slopes ready for its season opening on Jan. 14

Katie Law, the township's director of community and economic development, said staff will be on site in the upcoming days to make sure everything is ready.

“It looked like it was touch and go for some time because we didn't have quite enough snow,” she said. “But we were blessed with an abundance of snow over the Christmas break like the rest of the North Shore, so it looks like we're good to open.”

Law said that many people in the community are very excited to get out and enjoy the hill, especially now that COVID-19 restrictions are lessened.

“It's one of the gems in our town because it's special to the North Shore, so the only other ski hill between Sault Ste. Marie and Thunder Bay is Terrace Bay,” she said.

“So, our little community has a special little something, so it's always good for our community and it helps break up the really long, cold winter.”

Hill said the hill is a boon for local tourism and shes happy to see the effects it has on Manitouwadge.

“Quite often we see folks from neighbouring communities, like we have people that come in from Hornepayne, White River, Wawa, Geraldton, Longlac. So, it's really fun to see those guys come in on the weekend,” she said.

“That, of course, helps our businesses downtown, they're they're going to go to restaurants, they're going to check out the grocery stores and all of the other stores that we have, if they stay in one of our hotels or Airbnbs, that's a bonus, so it is good for tourism.”
