TERRACE BAY—Superior North Catholic District School Board has long made providing their students with many opportunities to learn through hands-on tools and robotics, when implementing the curriculum.
The future of SNCDSB holds a strategic priority on a focus that promotes a “modern, creative and leading-edge culture”. On March 7, the board announced that in partnership with Qualcomm and FIRST Canada, more than 55 students in Grades 5 to 8 were able to participate in this year’s FIRST LEGO League Challenge Cargo Connect session.
Superior North Catholic District School Board was pleased to announce that they received more than $5,000 in Class Pack grants from FIRST LEGO League and $14,400 from Qualcomm.
The board thanked these organizations for funding this event and spoke about the fact that five schools participated in the challenge that promotes Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics.
The program facilitates student problem-solving, coding and engineering by building and programming autonomous LEGO robots.
This year's challenge required that students learn about how cargo is transported, sorted and delivered to its destination. Students practiced the engineering design process and identify, design and create solutions to transport cargo more efficiently.
This marked the first year that SNCDSB students participated in the entire challenge by completing an “Innovation Project”, as well as building and coding a robot to compete in the robot game.
Peggy Scott has been working with educators and students for more than four years, supporting STEM learning with LEGO and has also been a valued volunteer with FIRST Canada. In the past, pre-COVID, she would travel to the SNCDSB to visit schools and facilitate hands-on learning for the board’s Technology Enable Learning teacher, Sarah Clowes.
All SNCDSB schools have had the pleasure of meeting Scott and working with her. This year, Scott has been meeting with students virtually to teach them how to code using LEGO’s new Scratch-based programming-LEGO Mindstorm's EV3 Classroom and LEGO Education SPIKE Prime.
SNCDSB shared how there have been numerous supporters who have helped to make this learning opportunity available to their students.
