Let’s not forget about our pet’s safety during heat waves

Hot temperatures is something that may be the norm for so many communities across the province, with Thunder Bay not being an exception. Heat waves are dangerous to not only humans but also to our pets.

THUNDER BAY—Temperatures across the province including the city of Thunder Bay have been soaring, and the word is that it is just going to continue getting hotter this summer.

With this in mind, the Ontario SPCA and Humane Society wants to remind pet families to keep the safety of their pets on the top of their minds. The recently offered five key tips to help keep your pets cool and safe this summer.

The Thunder Bay and District Humane Society, agrees with the importance of remembering that extreme heat can also be dangerous for our pets.

Like humans, pets can suffer from heat exhaustion, and need to stay hydrated and cool as much as possible during a heat wave.

In speaking with Shawna Beaulieu, Thunder Bay and District Humane Society executive director, she pointed out several key things that all pet owners should remember when the temperature outside gets too hot.

A big one for her is to not leave pets in a car, even with a cracked window.

“The impact of leaving your pet in a car, even with a cracked window is dangerous. You run into a store for what may be a quick visit, “But it can be detrimental even with that cracked window,” stresses Beaulieu.

Even as responsible pet owners we often are not thinking about how extremely hot it can get in a parked vehicle even with the window cracked open.

Another area Beaulieu wants pet owners to focus on is taking short walks. “Pay attention to the weather. Short frequent walks versus long walks are better. Walking in the morning when the weather is cooler,” stated Beaulieu, are a few things pet owners should consider for their pets.

Beaulieu also pointed out that pet owners do have access to water tools that can help store water when walking with our pets, known as a “collapsible bowl”.

Like any pet owner we want what is best for them, keeping these very important and helpful hints in mind will ensure that our pet is safe and healthy during those hot summer days, that meteorologists are saying are in the future this summer.
