GERALDTON—The Municipality of Greenstone took the time to celebrate their youth and thank the volunteers who made their Youth Soccer Program such a huge success this summer.
Both the Municipalities of Longlac and Geraldton held their soccer wind up on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2000 at their local Community Centres.
Children were treated to a visit from Sparky the Fire Dog. The windup involved a BBQ and treats, along with the presentation of trophies to all participants in attendance.
Their 2022 Soccer Season began in early August and had a total of 100 participants between the two communities.
The group of volunteers that made running their soccer program possible were also recognized at their wind-up celebration.
Brent Henley, Tourism Coordinator for the Municipality of Greenstone, shared his thoughts about the Youth Soccer Program that runs in Geraldton and Longlac each soccer season.
He shared the fact that over 100 youth from both communities participated in the wind-up which was held on Sept. 22, 2022.
“Age groups for the Geraldton Youth Soccer program includes: three-to-five-yr.-old; six-to-eight yr. old and 9-11 yr. old. In Longlac, the age groups are: three-to-five-yr.-old and six-to-eight yr. old. We are looking to build on that for next year and hoping to encourage some of the older kids to join,” stated Henley.
Henley spoke about having been able to purchase soccer nets for this year’s program which made a difference to the kids. “In the past the goal area was marked by pile-ons. But this year we purchased soccer nets which made it more fun and professional looking for the kids. They liked to be able kick into a net,” explained Henley.
Henley added that the communities plan on offering the Youth Soccer Program again next year with it running one day a week as they recognize that during the summer months there are other recreational activities that families also participate in.
