GREENSTONE — The journey to renaming a Longlac road continues.

Greenstone municipal council is set to receive a report from administration on changing the name of Indian Road in June.

Council will likely decide on a new name for the road by the end of the year, Mayor Jamie McPherson said this week.

“We are in the process of consultation with Indigenous communities to have their input on renaming Indian Road in the Longlac ward,” he told Newswatch.

“That process is moving forward and we hope to have a new name that is culturally sensitive and appropriate this year.”

The municipality’s current strategic plan identifies renaming the road as a council priority.

McPherson told Newswatch in January there’s no set timeline for the process but rather “it will be completed when all those who wish to provide input have had that opportunity.”

The communities giving input include the nearby Long Lake #58 and Ginoogaming First Nations, the mayor said.

Long Lake #58 is west of Longlac along Highway 11. Ginoogaming is linked to Longlac by a bridge over the Making Ground River.

Longlac is at the east end of Greenstone, a nearly 2,800-square-kilometre municipality that also includes the communities of Geraldton, Beardmore and Nakina.
