MANITOUWADGE—With the May long weekend fast approaching, many residents in the region are looking forward to going out to their seasonal properties and opening them up for the summer camping season.
Manitouwadge’s Fire Department offers some helpful tips to keep you and your family safe, when enjoying your seasonal properties.The barbeque, will be fired up but should always be cleaned and checked to make sure they are ready for use. Watch lit barbeques to make sure that all combustibles as well as children and pets are kept away from them. They remind users to keep matches out of sight and reach of children.
Their list of helpful tips includes:
- Checking heating appliances and chimneys before using them
- Checking with your local fire department, municipality, or Ministry of Natural Resources to determine whether open air burning is permitted before having a campfire or burning brush.
- Testing smoke alarms monthly or each time you return to your seasonal property
- Install and ensure carbon monoxide alarms in your seasonal home if it has a fuel-burning appliance.
- If you must smoke, do so outside. Keep a large can with water nearby so cigarette butts can be safely discarded.
