MANITOUWADGE – The Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department is keeping families safe and warm this holiday season.

This week, the Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department will be sharing two winter home safety tips a day to remind residents the importance of keeping their home safe and secure

On Monday, the fire department reminded residents the importance of keeping ice away from walkways and keeping pipes insulated.

Another important tip in keeping the home safe is to be cautious with space heaters.

Fire officials say space heaters can be combustible or can easily light objects on fire that are placed too closely.

If you are using a space heater, it is critical to not leave it on unattended and to plug it in directly into the wall.

It is also important to use gas heaters responsibly.

Gas heaters can also put you at risk for carbon monoxide poisoning in an unvented house.

It is unsafe to use a gas heater within the home, but if you need to use a gas heater, make sure it is an approved product and be sure to follow all the instructions.
