MANITOUWADGE -- The Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department urging families to keep homes safe and secure this holiday season.

This week, the Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department has been sharing two winter home safety tips a day to remind residents the importance of keeping their home safe and secure.

Up to this point, the fire department has reminded residents the importance of keeping ice away from walkways, keeping pipes insulated, being cautious with space heaters, using gas heaters responsibly, keeping flammable objects away from heaters, fireplace safety, keeping chimneys clean and keeping an emergency kit.

Another important tip the fire department wants families to be aware of is making sure your house is prepared for a blackout. The emergency kit in your household would be useful in a blackout.

It’s also important to invest in battery powered motion sensors.

During blackouts, your household is vulnerable to attacks from burglars. This is why a standard home system won’t always work, you also need a makeshift system that doesn’t rely on the power grid.
