MANITOUWADGE -- The Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department wants your family to be safe and warm this holiday season.

This week, the Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department has been sharing two winter home safety tips a day to remind residents the importance of keeping their home safe and secure.

Up to this point, the fire department has reminded residents the importance of keeping ice away from walkways, keeping pipes insulated, being cautious with space heaters, using gas heaters responsibly, keeping flammable objects away from heaters and fireplace safety.

Another important tip in keeping the home safe and secure is to clean and have your chimneys inspected once a year.

A clogged chimney is dangerous as the soot in the chimney can catch fire when exposed to high temperatures.

It’s also important to keep a winter safety kit in case there’s a drastic change in weather.

If you happen to get snowed in at least you can rely on an emergency kit to help keep you safe for a few days.

Your winter safety kit should include food, flashlight, shovel heat source, blankets and other survival gear depending where you live.
