MANITOUWADGE -- The Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department is keeping families safe and warm this holiday season.

This week, the Manitouwadge Volunteer Fire Department will be sharing two winter home safety tips a day to remind residents the importance of keeping their home safe and secure.

Up to this point, the fire department has reminded residents the importance of keeping ice away from walkways, keeping pipes insulated, being cautious with space heaters and using gas heaters responsibly.

Another important tip in keeping the home safe and secure is to keep flammable objects three feet away from heaters, so materials such as paper products, cardboard and fabrics don’t ignite.

Additionally, it’s important to secure your fireplace, because a fireplace is the fastest fire starter in the home.

Fire officials say putting a grate around the front of your fireplace is crucial in preventing coals and other flammable pieces from popping out of the blaze and onto the carpet, curtains or lampshade.

Last tip of the day, is to never leave your fire unattended.
