MARATHON — The Marathon Chamber of Commerce is launching a new initiative encouraging people to shop local this holiday season.
Over the weekend, the chamber kicked off its Give Where You Live, a giveaway event encouraging residents to shop at and support local businesses.
Dayna Bobrowski-Lowndes, the president of the chamber of commerce, said the event usually starts later in the month but they wanted to get an earlier headstart this year.
“Typically, we launch this on Black Friday, but we see shoppers want to shop earlier for the holidays,” Bobrowski-Lowndes said. “We wanted to make sure that shopping locally is on the top of their minds and it is a way of rewarding shoppers for keeping their dollars in town."
The giveaway features five gift bag prizes. Four are filled with local goods, along with $100 in gift certificates for local businesses. The fifth — the grand prize bag — includes those items but also comes with a scenic boat tour from North Shore Adventures valued at $300.
Bobrowski-Lowndes said, along with making purchases from local businesses, people can also participate by supporting charitable causes.
“You can also donate money in support of a not-for-profit organization or charity in the community. The minimum donation for that is $20,” she said.
The grand prize draw will be held Dec. 22, as this event ends on Dec. 21. More information can be found online: www.tinyurl.com/shoplocal2022
