Marathon hospital temporarily closes emergency room

The hospital reports that the closure is due to difficulties staffing the essential service.

MARATHON - The Emergency Department at Wilson Memorial General Hospital will be temporary closed Dec. 4 until 7 p.m.

The hospital reports that the closure is due to difficulties staffing the essential service.

In a post on social media, the North of Superior Healthcare Group says they have been facing significant shortages in health human resources for the past several years, particularly in nursing.

“This shortage is being felt throughout the Province and has been compounded by burn-out after 22 months of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic,” the post read.

“Having considered the safe and quality care requirements of our communities and having investigated all support options, we have now made the difficult decision to implement our contingency plan and announce this Emergency Department closure.”

The hospital says that anyone who is in need of emergency healthcare should go directly to Sante Manitouwadge Health at 1 Healthcare Crescent, Manitouwadge, Ontario, the McCausland Hospital at 20B Cartier Road, Terrace Bay, Ontario or call 911.

For healthcare issues that are less urgent, the hospital urges patients to call their local primary care provider or Telehealth at 1-866-797-0000
