Marathon OPP provide tips to keep tiny trick-or-treaters safe

With hundreds of children out trick-or-treating in the region on Halloween night, Marathon OPP want to help them stay safe.

MARATHON — Hundreds of young trick-or-treaters will be about across the region on Halloween night hoping to fill their bags with treats.

Staff Sgt. Cam Ducharme, the comamnder of the Marathon Ontario Provincial Police detachment, said it's important for children to wear properly sized costumes, masks, and to watch out for traffic, in order to stay safe.

“I understand that people will at times us a mask. Just ensure that the eyeholes are big enough so the child can see where they are going and watch the traffic and things like that,” Ducharme said.

Ducharme offered a few other safety tips including:

  • Never go trick-or-treating alone
  • Always go in a group of with a buddy
  • Never enter a stranger’s house
  • Always have your candy inspected by an adult when you return home
  • Wear the proper sized costume
  • Watch for traffic when crossing the street

Keeping these safety tips in mind for tonight will help ensure that youngsters filled with excitement as they go out trick-or-treating will stay safe.
