MARATHON – It’s official: Marathon’s mayor will be on the ballot in Thunder Bay-Superior North as the Progressive Conservative candidate.

Rick Dumas told Newswatch the party notified him by text message a little after 9 p.m. Tuesday that he’s officially their candidate in the electoral district that includes Marathon and north Thunder Bay.

“I’m running because I believe that Mr. Ford is doing the right thing in terms of protecting us from the threats to our province from (U.S. President Donald Trump),” Dumas said in a phone interview Wednesday morning.

The Marathon native, who ran businesses and was a maintenance mechanic for Marathon Non Profit Housing, served as a town councillor from 1991 to 1997 and 2000 to 2006. He ran unsuccessfully for mayor in 1997.

He was elected mayor in 2006 and acclaimed to new terms in 2010, 2014, 2018 and 2022.

Dumas is president of the Thunder Bay District Municipal League and last June he received a Legacy Award from the Marathon & District Chamber of Commerce.

“I’ve done a great job for our municipality, and I think I can do a great job for Thunder Bay-Superior North,” he said Wednesday.

Dumas will be on the ballot with NDP incumbent Lise Vaugeois and Liberal candidate Brian Hamilton, a Thunder Bay city councillor.

Election day is February 27.
