Marathon's ski club preparing for opening

Marathon Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Club is waiting for the snow it needs to begin this year’s ski season.

MARATHON — Winter weather is starting to make its way in the region, but the Marathon Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Club needs more snow to open.

The club will be holding its annual general meeting on Wednesday, in advance of this winter.

Mitchel Hatton, the club's communications executive, said there are a few things that will determine when the club will open for the season.

Hatton said last year's opening was late, coming in mid-December, and hopes the club can get an earlier start this year.

It will depend on having enough snow to have the trails groomed, he added.

The club is volunteer-run, with roles including chalet attendants, lesson instructors, and equipment maintenance.

“We have enough volunteers to open for the season, but we need more snow so that we can run our first grooming base for the season,” Hatton said.

Hatton said the organization is also looking for board members.

“A few members will be leaving, so we are trying to get other interested volunteers to serve on the executive,” Hatton said. “As of today, we have eight members on the executive, but we’d like to have between eight and 13 serving on the board.
