TERRACE BAY – Mayoral candidate Paul Malashewski says his experience shows he has a proven interest in moving Terrace Bay forward.

Malashewski spent the last four years at the Terrace Bay council table, and has been active with various committees and volunteer organizations in town for 45 years.

“I've been involved with the community for like I said, 45 years, I'm visible, I guess you'd say, in the community,” he said. “I'm out and about every day, I'm approachable and I know I understand the issues this community faces."

Malashewski would like to see the new council keep moving forward with initiatives and addressing concerns in the community as he had helped with during his time on council.

“I would like to see us continue with the waterfront development project, moving that forward, and there's still some work to do in the downtown area there, that project wasn't completed either,” he said.

“And like every other community around, there's still issues with, you know, senior housing or helping the seniors out in their own home. I'd like to see something happen there also.”

In his time speaking to community members, Malashewski says the issues that seem to be brought up the most are bylaw enforcement and infrastructure. He says he'll work with council and administration to lobby senior levels of government for funding and grant opportunities to help maintain and improve roads, buildings and sewer and water infrastructure.

“There's a few places around town that should be cleaned up a bit, that’s one big issue, bylaw enforcement,” he said.

“And infrastructure work around town also... We still have some infrastructure underground, and so far, nothing has failed, but it is expensive to replace that stuff and some of our road infrastructure needs some work.”

Malashewski says that, if elected, he will keep Terrace Bay’s interests at heart, pointing to the EMS base consolidation

“That’s a big issue, Schreiber and Terrace Bay, if it gets consolidated, will be fighting over where the base is going to be situated,” he said.

“So that is a big issue, Terrace Bay has the major employer, AV Terrace Bay, they have a bigger population base, so, in my opinion, it would probably make more sense to have the base here if they’re going to go with just one base instead of two.”
