French to follow / Une version française suit
As the Franco-Ontarian flag marks its 50th anniversary and nearly 25 years after the release of the song "Mon beau drapeau," Brian St-Pierre has led a new version of this emblematic anthem.
The song was officially released on Aug. 29, just weeks before Franco-Ontarian Day and the flag’s anniversary celebrations.
For this project, he travelled across Ontario in collaboration with 16 artists and hundreds of students.
“We went from school to school with the Passeport Franco project. In each school, the students wrote a little piece of text, and we got them to sing and record it. That song then became the theme for their school board. It’s fantastic,” said St-Pierre.
Inclusion and diversity were central to the rewrite.
“We even changed the lyrics. Instead of saying les Français de l’Ontario, we now sing les francos de l’Ontario. That way it includes everyone, because we have so many newcomers from around the world who are choosing to live in French here in Ontario.”
The new version also highlights major artistic voices from the Franco-Ontarian community.
“We worked with 16 Franco-Ontarian artists" St-Pierre said. "Véronic DiCaire, Robert Paquette, Damien Robitaille, Céleste Lévis. Boom, we start with four artists who have made a real difference in Ontario French.”
For St-Pierre, this project is also a tribute to the North.
“I had two objectives in my head: to present our artists who succeed and who make a difference, not just in Ontario but everywhere in the world, and to show that we are a great people, a big community.”
The video accompanying the song makes that clear.
“We filmed children, teenagers, adults, even seniors. You see every generation singing "Mon beau drapeau." It’s a big gang, and it shows our collective pride,” he adds.
Brian St-Pierre will be in Thunder Bay on Sept. 27 for the raising of the Franco-Ontarian flag. Following Sudbury and other Northern stops, it will be a powerful moment for francophones in the region to hear their voices resonate in this new version of "Mon beau drapeau."

À l’occasion du 50e anniversaire du drapeau franco-ontarien et près de 25 ans après la sortie de la chanson Mon beau drapeau, Brian St-Pierre signe une nouvelle version de cet hymne emblématique.
La chanson est sortie officiellement le 29 août, quelques semaines avant la Journée des Franco-Ontariens et les célébrations du drapeau.
« On s’est promené d’école en école avec le projet Passeport Franco. Et puis de là, on avait un contrat de chaque école. Un petit bout de texte. Et qui les faire chanter et enregistrer cette chanson-là qui est devenue la chanson thème de leur conseil. C’est fantastique », raconte St-Pierre.
Il souligne que ce travail prend tout son sens lorsqu’il rejoint les communautés nord-ontariennes. « On a changé aussi la parole au lieu, les Français de l’Ontario. On dit les francos de l’Ontario qui incluent tout le monde parce qu’on a beaucoup de nouveaux arrivants qui nous arrivent partout dans le monde et qui s’établissent en Ontario français », précise-t-il.
La nouvelle version de Mon beau drapeau met également en lumière des figures artistiques marquantes de la francophonie ontarienne. « On a travaillé avec 16 artistes franco-ontariens. Véronic DiCaire, Robert Paquette, Damien Robitaille, Céleste Lévis, boom on commence avec quatres qui fait a une différence dans l’Ontario français. »
Pour St-Pierre, ce projet est aussi un hommage aux voix du Nord. « J’avais deux objectifs dans ma tête. Présenter nos artistes qui réussissent et qui fait une différence, pas juste en Ontario mais partout dans le monde. Puis… démontrer qu’on était un grand peuple, grand beaucoup de monde. »
La vidéo qui accompagne la chanson illustre cette réalité : « On a filmé autant des enfants que des adolescents, des adultes, des personnes âgées… toutes les âges qui chantent en beau drapeau. Pis dit oh, my God, c’est une grosse gang parce que ça arrête pas d’avoir des images à pas », ajoute-t-il.
Brian St-Pierre sera à Thunder Bay le 27 septembre pour la cérémonie du lever du drapeau franco-ontarien. Après Sudbury et d’autres étapes dans le Nord, c’est un moment fort attendu par les francophones de la région, qui pourront entendre leur voix résonner dans cette nouvelle version de Mon beau drapeau.
