THUNDER BAY — The number of Thunder Bay district residents who have received three doses of COVID-19 vaccine increased significantly last week.

According to data released Tuesday by the district health unit, 24,377 people had been administered a third dose by Dec.18.

That's over 8,000 more than the total achieved by Dec. 11.

The same report shows 44 per cent of children in the district aged five to eleven had received their first dose of vaccine by Dec. 18.

Ninety-two percent of youths from 12 to 17 had received a first dose, and nearly 85 per cent in that age group had received two doses of vaccine.

Data from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit shows that 74 per cent of the district population, including all ages, was fully immunized (two doses) as of Dec. 18.

TBDHU uses population numbers based on the number of people registered with OHIP.

Immunization rates released by the Ministry of Heath are several percentage points higher because the ministry uses lower population numbers  based on Statistics Canada estimates.

As of Monday, all Ontario residents over 18 are now eligible to receive a third COVID-19 vaccination shot.
