MARATHON – Failing to stop for a traffic stop has led to charges against a Winnipeg driver.

Ontario Provincial Police, in a release issued on Wednesday, said they attempted on April 20, at about 11:30 a.m., to pull over a vehicle travelling at a high rate of speed on Highway 17 in Laberge Township, near Marathon.

The motorist instead fled, at a high rate of speed, leading police to not engage in pursuit in the interest of public safety.

Attempts to spike belt the vehicle were unsuccessful.

However, police soon located the vehicle and driver were spotted a short distance away and the driver was subsequently arrested.

A 22-year-old male from Winnipeg faces three counts of flight from a peace officer, two counts of dangerous operation, speeding and stunt driving.

The driver had his license suspended and his vehicle was impounded for 14 days. The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in court in Thunder Bay on June 25.

If anyone has any information regarding this incident, they are being asked to contact the Marathon OPP Detachment at 1-888-310-1122. Should you wish to remain anonymous you can call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
