Nipigon Public works updates residents on garbage collection

Nipigon Public works wishes to update residents regarding garbage collection as winter season approaches.

NIPIGON: The Township of Nipigon Public Works Department wishes to update residents regarding garbage collection in their community.

In order to facilitate easier access to household garbage, residents were informed that as of Nov. 1, garbage collection will change from lane ways to front of the street.

According to Jeff Aitken, Public Works manager and chief building official and water works, this is a change which is done twice a year. In the spring collection is done from lane ways but in the fall/winter it changes to the front of the street.

“This is a change we do in the fall/winter for better access to household garbage disposal.  Because of snow and weather changes in the winter, access to household back lanes becomes more difficult. So, for easier and safer access for our trucks we ask that residents change from lane ways to the front of the street,” said Aitken.

Another item of importance to Public Works is the disposal of glass and milk cartons at the landfill site. As a means of educating residents, the Public Works department reminds the community that they cannot accept glass and milk cartons at their Recycling Depot. “As an education component, we are reminding residents that we have never accepted glass and milk cartons at the Recycling Depot as we do not have a facility there for those items,” said Atiken.

In addition, a reminder to residents that Nipigon will be hosting their annual Hazardous Household Disposal Waste Day on Nov. 5, 2022.
