NIPIGON — Nipigon will use an appointment process to fill its council vacancy.

The township announced late last month that John Zechner had resigned from the role, leaving three councillors — Kathy Sakamoto, Gordon MacKenzie and Pierre Pelletier — alongside Mayor Suzanne Kukko.

Council met on Tuesday, where they passed a resolution to appoint a new member, rather than holding a by-election.

Nipigon CAO Kelly Paakkunainen, the application process is open to all residents of Nipigon until Feb. 24 at 4 p.m.

Paakkunainen said applicants must submit an application that outlines their qualifications, experience, and interest in holding a seat on the council.

Anyone interested in the role can send their application via email to the Paakkunainen; however, Paakkunainen states that he is accepting paper applications in case the applicants have questions about the position.
