Nipigon’s St. Edward Catholic School starts Christmas food drive

Students can bring in non-perishable food items and monetary donations now through Dec. 9

NIPIGON — Students at St. Edward Catholic School have started their Christmas food drive.

Collection for the holiday hampers started on Monday, and will continue through the end of next week on Dec. 9.

School administrative assistant Susan Lemieux said the project asks students to bring in a non-perishable item for the hampers. As well, monetary donations will also be accepted in order to help purchase turkeys and fresh vegetables for a “complete Christmas dinner”.

Lemieux said the students will help organize the food donations and prepare each hamper.

“We have a box at the back of each classroom which gets emptied daily," she said. "Then the box is returned for items to be placed in it the next day.”

“What we do within the food hamper is we have a complete turkey dinner, potatoes, carrots, bread, stuffing, cranberry sauce and have dessert items, and food for breakfast in the morning.”

Lemieux said the students recognize the importance of the initiative.

“The kids know we are doing good things and they all be involved," she said.

Lemieux said once the hampers are complete, the local local Children’s Aid Society is notified to come pick them up.

“We also keep one or two Christmas Food Hampers to give to families within our school who are in need,” she said.
