NIPIGON — A crash that closed Highway 17 east of Nipigon on Tuesday resulted in the death of one person, while two other people were taken to hospital with injuries.

Provincial police confirmed the two-vehicle crash involved a passenger vehicle and a commercial motor vehicle. The incident happened about 25 kilometres from the town.

A police spokesperson said one person in the passenger vehicle, a 61-year-old, has died. Another person in the vehicle was taken to hospital with critical injuries.

The driver of the commercial motor vehicle was taken to hospital with undetermined injuries.

The crash had closed Highway 17 between Nipigon and Schreiber for an extended period of time on Tuesday. Further sections were closed later Tuesday night, due to additional incidents and poor weather conditions.

The highway reopened Wednesday morning.
