TORONTO—Ontario National Indigenous History Month is being celebrated in June. The Ministry of Indigenous Affairs office shared how they see this as an important opportunity to learn more about the distinct cultures, languages and traditions of Indigenous peoples.

According to their news release, they envision National Indigenous History Month as, “A time for all Ontarians to recognize and honour the rich and diverse histories and current realities of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples across the province and Canada.”

It is seen as a time to come together as a province to celebrate the contributions that Indigenous peoples have made and continue to shape Ontario and Canada.

Ontario Ministry of Indigenous Affairs shared their thoughts by stating that, “Indigenous peoples continue to inspire us with their strength, resiliency and steadfast commitment to Indigenous values, often in the face of incredible obstacles. These obstacles include, amongst other challenges, the tragic impact of the Indian Residential School system on Survivors, and their families and communities.”

The month of June is seen as an opportunity for all of Ontario and Canada to come together in the spirit of unity and understanding to celebrate Indigenous peoples and their many achievements. As the Ministry of Indigenous Affairs describes it, it is a time when, “By deepening our collective understanding and appreciation of Indigenous histories, strengths, and contributions, we can all actively embrace the journey towards advancing the process of reconciliation.”
