Parks Canada plans to start Discovery Centre build next year

Nipigon council wanted an update on the project, which is part of Parks Canada's Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area

NIPIGON — Nipigon's mayor says Parks Canada is looking to break ground in the spring on its Discovery Centre.

Mayor Suzanne Kukko said the town's council wanted an update on the project.

“Basically, Parks Canada was hoping to get the shovels in the ground last spring and we were hoping for that as well. But the tender wasn’t up to their standard up to that point,” Kukko said.

The discovery centre is part of the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area project, which dates back to 2007. Last year, it had been expected that the building design and tendering process would have been completed by the end of 2021.

“They’re continuing to work on that tender through the winter and hoping to get shovels in the ground by spring of 2023, and looking at an 18 month to two year window for construction, so very exciting,” Kukko said.

The discovery centre building would also serve as the headquarters and administration offices for the Lake Superior National Marine Conservation Area.
