Pass Lake truck stop restaurant is closed

The restaurant was located at the Flying J Travel Centre near the Pass Lake turnoff

THUNDER BAY  — Truckers and other travellers looking to grab a bite to eat have lost access to a popular dining spot between Thunder Bay and Nipigon.

The restaurant at the Flying J Travel Centre on Highway 11/17 near Pass Lake has been closed.

It's not clear whether or when it might be reopened.

The restaurant was closed following the death of owner and operator Michael McLean in January.

Customers have been told there are no current plans to resume operations.

Shuniah Mayor Wendy Landry said she was sad to hear of McLean's passing, adding that he had a presence in the municipality.

Landry said the restaurant's closure "definitely has an impact on Shuniah," as did the closure of the Mackenzie Inn's restaurant on Highway 11/17 in 2018.

She said she hopes the truck stop eatery will be reopened in the near future, noting that local residents also enjoyed getting a meal there.

So far there's been no comment from the headquarters of U.S.-based Flying J, where a spokesperson promised Monday to follow up on a reporter's inquiry about the situation.
