MARATHON –The Town of Marathon is starting the development of Pebble Breach.
“We have our administrations as we speak on the plans. The plans are pretty well-developed and they will be presented to the council at the June 13 meeting to discuss what that looks like and how we move forward,” said Mayor Rick Dumas. “Work will be starting this summer on that site. From the preliminary plans, I’ve looked at, the residents will be very pleased no matter which plans the council accept from the administration.”
The enhancement hopes to help revitalize tourism to the community.
Back in March, the Ontario governing made a major contribution to the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation, providing more than $5.5 million to 23 projects throughout Northern Ontario. $450,000 was given to the Town of Marathon for the development of the Pebble Beach tourist area.
The two-kilometre pebbly beach is considered a rather unique attraction, due to its colourful rounded stones that have been polished smooth by erosion over thousands of years.
Dumas says some enhancements including the viewing section will be upgraded and improvements for accessibility.
The project also includes seasonal washrooms and updated parking, lighting and signage.
