Poor road conditions keep parts of Highways 11 and 17 closed

NIPIGON — Poor road conditions are continuing to hamper travel on sections of the Trans-Canada Highway late Wednesday afternoon.

Highway 11 remained closed between Nipigon and the Longlac area, according to Ontario511.

An image captured by an MTO traffic camera at the Nipigon River bridge at 4:25 pm showed a long line of vehicles backed up.

The Ministry of Transportation also reported a closure of Highway 17 between Wawa and Batchawana Bay shortly before 4 p.m. 

Environment Canada issued a snow squall warning for the Lake Superior shoreline north of Sault Ste. Marie, with 20 to 35 centimetres expected by Thursday morning.

Reduced visibility was expected, especially during wind gusts of up to 80 kilometres per hour Wednesday night into Thursday morning.
