North shore hospitals have received a bit of holiday cheer from the provincial government.
Five area hospitals have received funding for upgrades and repairs. Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Kevin Holland announced the funding on Thursday on behalf of Health Minister Sylvia Jones.
“I am pleased to see this funding come to Northwestern Ontario. This money will allow our partners in the healthcare system to address urgent infrastructure renewal needs such as upgrades or replacements of roofs, windows, security systems, fire alarms, and backup generators,” said Holland.
The funding is part of the government’s investment of $182 million into the Infrastructure Renewal Fund and the Community Infrastructure Renewal Fund.
Making his announcement in Nipigon, Holland announced that the Nipigon District Memorial Hospital will receive nearly $112,000.
“We are extremely grateful NDMH has been selected to receive the Health Infrastructure Renewal Fund grant for the 2022/23 fiscal year,” said Lauren Haskell, the hospital's chief financial officer wrote in a news release.
“As an aging facility in the North, we rely heavily on this funding to make essential infrastructure repairs to our hospital,” Haskell continues.
Holland also announced the Geraldton District Hospital will get almost $200,000, Sante Manitouwadge Health Hospital will receive $243,000, and North of Superior Healthcare Group in Terrace Bay and Marathon will receive $482,000.
“NOSH is grateful for the continuing support of the Ministry of Health, as evidenced by this significant HIRF investment in maintenance of our critical hospital infrastructure in Terrace Bay and Marathon,” said NOSH Chief Executive Officer Adam Brown.
