TERRACE BAY – The Ontario government will spend $277,147 to renovate the Terrace Bay Memorial Arena
The funding will be distributed through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund, part of the provincial plan to help northern communities build and improve community facilities.
The money will be used to repair the foundation of the 71-year-old facility, install a waterproof membrane and to replace piping and operating equipment.
“Our government is proud to support projects such as this because community hubs in the North are important spaces for residents to come together and invest in their own health and wellbeing,” said George Pirie, Minister of northern economic development and growth, in a release issued on Tuesday.
“At a time when people are looking for more ways to support their local communities and find activities close to home, revitalizing the arena will ensure it can continue to be an important space where residents can navigate their fitness journeys and enjoy various sports and community events.”
It’s money well spent, said Terrace Bay Mayor Paul Malashewski.
“With this contribution, we can ensure our arena remains a safe, welcoming space for sport, activity and connection. This investment is a meaningful step in strengthening our community’s health, well-being and vibrancy.”
The rink, built in 1954, is the oldest community recreation centre in Terrace Bay, which is used for skating in the winter and an indoor court space in warmer weather.
