LAKE HELEN 53A —  Following an emergency meeting held on Feb. 27 which provided clarity for some members of the Red Rock Indian Band, the search for a new chief is nearly underway.

The Red Rock Indian Band administration posted a notice to social media inviting members to meet and select an electoral officer ahead of an upcoming byelection for chief.

News of a byelection comes over a month after the initial vote to remove former Chief Marcus Hardy - who faced allegations of “misuse of the Red Rock Indian Band credit card” - from office.

The vote was initially disputed but eventually confirmed in a statement released by the administration.

Hardy had until March 8 to call an emergency meeting and appeal the vote.

A joint statement recently released by the Red Rock Indian Band administration and council acknowledged the appeal timeline but confirmed Hardy “has chosen not to appeal.”

As a result, a new byelection is on the horizon.

The meeting to select an electoral officer will be held tonight in the Band Office boardroom.

The Red Rock Indian Band’s next general band meeting is scheduled for April 3.
