RED ROCK — The president of the Royal Canadian Legion branch in Red Rock says despite some financial challenges, any rumours of the branch having to close its doors are not true.

Royal Canadian Legion Branch 226 recently sent a letter to Red Rock municipal officials, expressing concern about the declining number of people attending their events.

Legion branch president Carl Sodergrene said the COVID-19 pandemic has taken a toll, but the branch is holding its own.

“We know there is a rumour going around. We are not as rich as we used to be and we are struggling a bit financially, but we are holding our own,” Sodergrene said. “Five years ago, things were a lot better.”

Sodergrene said the letter was sent in advance of a meeting that they are planning to have.

"We thought we should let them know that our financial situation isn’t as good as it used to be," Sodergrene said.

Red Rock Mayor Darquise Robinson said she received the letter.

“They are asking that the township come up with ideas as to how to get the numbers up and the place hopping again," she said.

Red Rock CAO Mark Figliomeni said he plans to meet with the Legion's executive, and that the Legion is an important part of the community.

“We definitely see great value in the Legion in Red Rock and would love to help keep it open and prosperous for the future," Figliomeni said.

Sodergrene said the Legion is planning to meet with the municipal officials at some point after Remembrance Day.

Sodergrene added that their branch is hosting the district semi-annual spring meeting, scheduled to take place in March, and will host several legion branches including Schreiber-Terrace Bay and Thunder Bay.
