HORNEPAYNE—The Township of Hornepayne’s Porcupine Health Unit wants residents to “Stay on Your Feet”. It recently launched a program to help the public stay safe by removing and reporting hazards, that they may encounter inside their homes or on residential walkways.

PHU reminds residents to be aware of common hazards inside the home such as poorly lit stairs, as well as hazards outside, like walkways that are wet or covered in leaves or snow. Should you see a potential hazard, PHU asks that you report it to your local public works department, the owner of the home or manager of the commercial premises.

Stay on Your Feet is a regional strategy aimed at improving the quality of life for older adults across northeastern Ontario. It is a program initiated in partnership with five public health units, including Algoma Public Health, Timiskaming Health Unit, Public Health Sudbury and District, North Bay Perry Sound District Health Unit, and Porcupine Health Unit.

Together, these five public health units have identified five key areas aimed at improving the quality of life for seniors and encouraging communities to support programs that help develop healthy options for older adults. According to this regional strategy, these five key areas include:

  1. Strengthen Community Action – older adults and partners set priorities and direction
  2. Develop Personal Skills – older adults have options to improve their health
  3. Create Supportive Environments – communities and services reinforce healthy options for older adults
  4. Build Healthy Public Policy – organizations, local and provincial governments support older adults to remain healthy and live independently through policies that promote health
  5. Reorient (Health) Services – everyone does their part to make healthy aging possible for all.
