GREENSTONE – A productive day for Greenstone's Mayor Renald Beaulieu at the Association of Municipalities Conference in Ottawa on Monday.

Beaulieu met with the Ministry of Finance Assistant Stephan Crawford to discuss insurance rates, a key issue for the municipality.

“Insurance rates, and that’s where we were coming from in trying to get a cry for help in seeing what can be done in regards to the province to help us reduce insurance,” Beaulieu said.

“From 2017 to today, [insurance] has went up five times what it was in 2017, so we are paying over $9,000 a year in insurance in Greenstone…that represents about 6 per cent of taxes on our tax bill.”

The Nipigon delegation was also in attendance for several of Monday’s meetings.

Mayor Richard Harvey says one key session was with the Solicitor General.

“Our fire services, our emergency measure services and seeking assistance as we transition to a lot of the new standards that are taking place making sure we have that full support of the ministry, the provincial government,” Harvey said.

The AMO Conference wraps up Wednesday afternoon.
