KASABONIKA LAKE — Police in Kasabonika Lake First Nation have arrested a charged a man with a number of weapons-related offences after an assault involving a shotgun in the isolated community.

In a media release issued Tuesday, Nishnawbe Aski police said they were called to a home in Kasabonica on the evening of May 2 about an assault in progress. The report stated the incident involved a shotgun.

The accused was allegedly involved in an altercation at the home when he became violent and grabbed the firearm. He then fled when he was told police were coming, the NAPS release said.

When officers arrived, the man had already left, but he returned and was arrested “without incident,” police said. No shots were fired, according to NAPS and the victims reportedly did not appear to have been seriously hurt.

The man was charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, careless use of a firearm, possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose and unauthorized possession of a firearm.

He appeared in bail court on Saturday, was kept in custody and has a future court date, police said.

Kasabonika is located nearly 600 kilometres north of Thunder Bay.
