Man arrested on multiple violent offences after fleeing police

The 21-year-old Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg man was wanted on three separate warrants and had evaded police for months, according to the Anishinabek Police Service.

PARRY SOUND — A suspect who had been actively evading police for months was arrested after fleeing a RIDE check, according to recent reports from two separate police services.

The 21-year-old from Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg was a passenger in a vehicle stopped by West Parry Sound OPP officers conducting a RIDE check on ar about 11 p.m. April 30, according to a news release from the OPP. 

Police alleged that he jumped into the driver's seat of the vehicle and fled while police investigated an apparent open liquor bottle.

When officers used a spike belt to stop the vehicle the man fled on foot, said police. 

Officers continued to search into the night, said police, with assistance from the OPP's emergency response team and canine units, culminating in the arrest of the 21-year-old the next morning.

The accused had been actively evading police for four months, according to a separate news release issued by Anishinabek Police Service on Friday.

According to APS he was wanted in connection with a series of violent incidents in Netmizaaggamig Nishnaabeg and Biigtigong Nishnaabeg between January and April.

APS laid numerous charges against the man, including with two counts each of intimidation, assault and assault causing bodily harm, three counts each of assault with a weapon and forcible confinement, as well as several firearms- and weapons-related offences, including one count each of pointing a firearm and possession of an imitation weapon for a dangerous purpose.

OPP charged the man with several more offences, including flight from a peace officer, theft of a motor vehicle over $5000, possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, having liquor in an open container, and impersonation to avoid arrest.
